A common problem we
encounter with low slope roofs is the use of roll roofing. This material
is rolled out and overlapped like very long shingles. The material is nailed
down, then the seams are sealed. Rolled roofing is an inexpensive
roofing material, but it was not designed for, and should never be used
on, roofs with a slope less than 3/12 (a 3” rise every 12”).
Premier will not install roll roofing on low slope roofs.
The most common type
of flat roof material we install is modified bitumen.
Modified bitumen also comes in rolls, and looks similar to roll roofing.
But this material is torch applied over a base sheet, creating a seamless, one
piece covering for the roof. The heating process ensures that there will be no
leaks. Modified bitumen comes in several colors, one of which will probably
match the shingled portions of your roof. All flat roofs require periodic maintenance. If you plan on installing a flat roof, plan to have maintenance performed every other year to ensure it remains watertight.
