Metal Roofs

Metal roofing is very popular in Central Texas.  The beauty, durability, and ease of maintenance are quite appealing.  Metal roofs can best be categorized into 2 types, those attached with exposed fasteners and those attached with hidden fasteners.

The standing seam roof is the most durable and maintenance-free metal roof in the world. It is usually constructed of a heavy-duty steel panel which is seamed together. There are no exposed fasteners with this system. Standing seam roofs are among the most expensive metal roofs in the market. They come is a wide variety of beautiful colors and a few different profiles. Once installed, they will last virtually a lifetime!

Roofs with exposed fasteners, often called screw-down roofs, are very popular and very durable. The most common type of screw-down roof is the Galvalume Channel-Drain system. Whether it’s a Standing Seam or Screw-Down roof, there are many different profiles available in Central Texas. The Channel-Drain is the most common in our area.

Screw-down roofs are attached with exposed fasteners as shown in this illustration. The watertight seal is achieved with the help of a Neoprene washer. The only real maintenance with a screw-down roof is the periodic changing of old screws and washers. Other than that, they last just as long as a standing seam.

The popularity of screw-down roofs is threefold. First, it is less expensive than a standing seam roof. Second, it’s easier to install, and lastly, it’s a lifetime roof. Both roof types will help reduce your homeowners insurance. Metal roofs withstand hail, fire and wind damage much better than shingled roofs!
